Today in NYC! Set the Guinness World Record For Most Adopted Pets In One Place!

This afternoon in Central Park, Sony and Petco are partnering up to try to break the Guinness World Record for the most adopted dogs in one place. Oh, and Gavin Degraw is apparently performing too.

The effort is intended to raise awareness about pet adoption, and particularly Petco’s adoption program which, they say, has placed more than 3 million animals in new homes.

The event starts at 4pm near the Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park. Counting begins at 5pm, and in order to be counted, you must have paperwork proving that your doggie was adopted from a shelter/rescue organization.

They’re going to have to gather at least 250 adopted dogs in order to set the record, so if you don’t have to be at work this afternoon, grab your shelter dog and make your way to the park!

ASPCA $100k Challenge Kicks Off (#ASPCA100k)

For the second year in a row, the ASPCA is running a campaign to reward community rescue organizations for their “energetic and innovative programs for getting more cats and dogs returned to owners or adopted into loving homes.”

Between August 1 and October 31, contestants hold events like adopt-a-thons, mobile adoptions, educational programs, and anything else they can think up to spread the word and get more cats and dogs adopted in their communities.

Called the “ASPCA $100k Challenge,” the program actually has $300,000 in prize money to give away to three winners:

* Largest increase in lives saved: The contestant that saves the largest number of additional cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies beyond the minimum 300 wins the $100,000 Grand Prize grant!
* Second place: The contestant that saves the second largest number of additional cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies beyond the minimum 300 lives saved wins the $25,000 Second Place grant!
* Largest increase in lives saved in each region: The contestant in each of five geographic regions that saves the largest number of additional cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies beyond the minimum 300 wins a $20,000 Best in Region grant.

After perusing the contest website, I was impressed by the resources the ASPCA is offering local shelters and rescue organizations to help them gain visibility — marketing materials, media toolkit, tutorials and webinars, and of course the website itself, which enables organizations to set up profile pages.

(The one thing I did find frustrating about the website as a visitor, was the inability to sort events by geographic location. It seemed I could only view events by date, which isn’t that helpful when I really want to see if anything’s happening in Brooklyn.)

I’m sure the program will be a success again this year. I just hope all the participating shelters will be responsible in screening potential adopters – we want the animals going to loving homes, right?

Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons’ Magic Under the Moonlight Fundraiser

Where will you be on Saturday August 13th? With any luck you said, “why, in the Hamptons of course!” If that’s the case, then surely you can spare a few hours to help the animals and kick up your heels at the same time.

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons is holding its annual ‘Magic Under the Moonlight’ event on Saturday August 13th, starting at 6.30pm (with cocktails and a raw bar, no less!)

They’ll be honoring Dr. Lewis Berman, Veterinarian and Founder of Park East Animal Hospital, for his 50 years of outstanding veterinary practice and service to the animal welfare community.  Cindy Adams will be on hand to present the award.

Snag yourself some tickets by contacting Kathy@arfhamptons.org or 631-537-0400 x214.  Looks like you can also buy tickets online.

Small dogs up for adoption at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington

According to the NY Post, dozens of dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri are making their way to Long Island, enroute to forever homes.  The North Shore Animal League in Port Washington is taking the 40 dogs in, evaluating their medical and behavioral status, and finding them new homes, starting next week.

The dogs are primarily small breeds – much in demand by city dwellers – and include Shih Tzus, Whippets, Pomeranian mixes, and Chihuahuas.

NSAL regularly raids puppy mills around the country, rescuing the grossly mistreated animals which are typically sold to pet stores.  To learn more about puppy mills, and why purchasing animals at pet stores fuels animal cruelty, go here.

For more information, check out the press release.  If you’re interested in adopting one of these dogs, please contact the North Shore Animal League.

Brooklynites! Dog owners! Awesomest Street Fair in Williamsburg on Saturday!!

Too many exclamation points? I think not.

Dog Addiction in Williamsburg insists that it’s still the dog days of summer and has assembled local retailers and organized a day of fun stuff for pet owners and non-pet owners alike.

Head to Berry Street, between Grand and N. 1st Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn from 11am-6pm for food, music, live demonstrations and more.  DA will be raffling off great prizes to raise money for the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC), the area’s only no-kill animal shelter.

As Dog Addiction owner Priti Punjabi says:

We really hope that anyone who has a pet, or has been thinking of getting one will come down and enjoy the fun and maybe get a new four legged friend.

Pup #3 rescued from Puerto Rico needs loving home!

Yes, you heard me.  There is a third puppy rescued from Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico up for adoption at Dog Addiction in Williamsburg.

Milli is one of 6 puppies that were found on Dead Dog Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The folks at Dog Addiction have found homes for her siblings as well as her mother.

According to DA:

Their temperaments are incredibly docile, sweet and gentle. We have barely heard them bark at all!… Milli is currently 24 lbs. Her mother is 20 lbs, we suspect she will get to a maximum of 30lbs.  Milli is playful but not unmanageable by any means. She does well when left alone. She would do great in any sort of household- she plays well with other dogs and cats – she loves cats. She’s the best cuddler and listens well. She walks on leash like a champ (although sometimes a bit startled still by loud trucks) and goes outside!

If you or someone you know may be interested in adopting Milli, please contact Priti at Dog Addition at 718-599-1656 or priti [at] dogaddiction [dot] com.

24-hour website makeover for BARC!

While doing my regular rounds on animal shelter websites this morning, I came across the nifty new site for the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) in Williamsburg.  According to their Facebook page, the site was launched around August 7th.  I particularly love the profiles of their adoptable pets.

But perhaps the best part of this story, is that the whole thing was done in 24 hours by design firm Barrel!  Very cool guys, very cool.

Pup #2 rescued from Puerto Rico needs loving home!

Me llamo Gordo. Pero no soy gordo!

You may have seen my post at the end of July about Choco, the puppy rescued from Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico by the kind folks at Dog Addiction in Williamsburg.  Well, lo and behold, Priti, the owner of Dog Addiction fell in love and is keeping Charo (née Choco) for herself!

BUT!  The story doesn’t end there.  Two of Charo’s siblings are set to arrive in Brooklyn later this week.  Leona is spoken for, but Gordo (means “fat” in Spanish – though he doesn’t look chubby in his photo!) is going to need a new home in hipsterville.  Here’s a description of him from DA:

Gordo is one of 6 puppies that were found on Dead Dog Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We have found homes for two of his sisters, a brother and his mother! These guys are extremely docile and gentle. We have barely heard them bark at all! They are generally a bit nervous the first few weeks in New York City- they are getting used to all the sounds (they really freak out around fire trucks, but that will pass). Gordo is about 5 months old and is currently 16-18 lbs. His mother is 20 lbs, we have not seen his father but we suspect he will get to a maximum of 30lbs. Based on looking at the mother and the litter we suspect the puppies are a mix of Spaniel, Terrier and German Shepherd.

He’s a playful guy (but what puppy isn’t!) and would likely do well in an active household (kids, other pets, etc.)  If you’d like to learn more about Gordo, please call Priti at 718-599-1656 or email her at priti [at] dogaddiction [dot] com

Also, don’t forget about these organizations who are working to alleviate the dog abandonment problem at Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico:

I’m sure they appreciate donations since they’re generally not government-supported.
