Brooklyn Hottest Dog Contest This Weekend at the Banfield Pet Hospital Grand Opening

Just a few short days after the grand opening of the Brooklyn Heights/Boerum Hill PetSmart on Atlantic Avenue, the Banfield Pet Hospital will mark its own grand opening with a “hottest dog” contest.

On Saturday November 12th from 11am to 1pm, you can swing by the PetSmart to join the competition (winners will receive a free year of veterinary care), eat a hotdog, and meet competitive eater (and Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest winner in 2007 through 2011), Joey Chestnut.

The Banfield Pet Hospital is located within the PetSmart at 238 Atlantic Avenue between Court St. and Boerum Place.

2nd Annual Brooklyn Heights Dog Show – Sept. 18th

The tradition of last year’s Brooklyn Heights Dog Show will be carried on this weekend during the Montague Street BID’s Summer Space event. Taking place on (where else?) Montague Street on Sunday, September 18th at 1pm (other activities will be happening all day), this year’s competition includes the following categories:

Best Smile
Best Tail Wagger
Best Trick
Best Hairdo
Most Affectionate
Cutest Dog
and of course, Best in Show

The winners will be selected by a panel of four judges, but the Best in Show winner is chosen by the audience. Unfortunately I can’t attend, but personally I think Duke would be a shoe-in for Best Smile!

You can download a flyer with more info here.

Thanks Brooklyn Heights Association for hosting and compiling this adorbs video from Saturday’s event.

And over at McBrooklyn you can check out some cute photos and a summary of all the winners.

Brooklyn Heights Association to hold dog show – Sunday, Sept 19

This Sunday, September 19th, the Brooklyn Heights Association will hold its first ever dog show.  Montague Street will be closed off to traffic for the afternoon (the event runs from 1pm-3pm, registration at noon) and proud BH dog owners (and I know there are many of you) can enter their pups in up to 2 of the following categories (from the BHA website):

1. BEST TAIL WAGGING: Dogs judged on the exuberance of their tail motion.

2. MOST AFFECTIONATE:  Beyond tail wagging and adorable looks, this is an extrovert.

3. BEST LOOK ALIKE:  To judge which owner looks most like his/her canine companion.

4. MOST OBEDIENT: To show off how well your dog listens to your commands.

5. LEAST OBEDIENT: If you didn’t win in class number 4, here’s your chance.

6. MOST MYSTERIOUS HERITAGE:  You won’t find this class at Westminster.

7. TERRIFIC PET TRICK (s):  Show off your dog’s talent at anything.

8. BEST PUPPY: They’re cute, adorable-they’ll steal the show! This is for puppies aged 14 weeks to 6 months. The judges will have a tough time picking the winner of this class.

9. BEST SENIOR DOG: While perhaps showing a little grey around the muzzle, this class of dogs 7 years and older will truly capture the spirit of “man’s best friend.”

10. BEST HAIRDO: This class is for canines with class and a little bit of attitude.

11. BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE: This class features special vocal talents – includes barking, snorting, howling etc.

12. BEST PAIRS: Double your fun with a pair of dogs walking together with one owner.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE BEST OF SHOW AWARD: 1st Place winners from above classes are invited back to be judged by the crowd as Brooklyn Heights’ Top Dog. (Based on a show of hands.)

Registration will take place from 12 to 12.45pm.  The BHA says they can handle a maximum of 60 dogs, and preference will be given to Heights residents.

Brooklynites! Dog owners! Awesomest Street Fair in Williamsburg on Saturday!!

Too many exclamation points? I think not.

Dog Addiction in Williamsburg insists that it’s still the dog days of summer and has assembled local retailers and organized a day of fun stuff for pet owners and non-pet owners alike.

Head to Berry Street, between Grand and N. 1st Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn from 11am-6pm for food, music, live demonstrations and more.  DA will be raffling off great prizes to raise money for the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC), the area’s only no-kill animal shelter.

As Dog Addiction owner Priti Punjabi says:

We really hope that anyone who has a pet, or has been thinking of getting one will come down and enjoy the fun and maybe get a new four legged friend.

Here’s the event flyer:

Block Party and Benefit for Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) – Sunday Sept. 12

If you’re sticking close to home this weekend to recover from your Labor Day revelry, you may want to head to Williamsburg on Sunday for an afternoon of food, music, beer, and doggies, all to benefit the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC). Check out the flier below:

Brooklyn Cyclones ‘Bark in the Park’ Night – Tuesday Aug. 24

Support the Brooklyn Cyclones and bring your dog to the game Tuesday evening for Bark in the Park Night, sponsored by Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals and Purina Dog Chow.

The Cyclones will be playing the Hudson Valley Renegades at MCU Park at 7pm.  Dogs (and their owners) will be in the bleacher section behind right field, probably not paying much attention to the game….

You’ll need special tickets in order to gain access for your pooch.  Call 718-37-BKLYN or go to the MCU Park ticket window to snag the special tix.  As far as how to get your dog to the park, you’re on your own!

Coney Island Sweetheart Pet Pageant…for any “creature that would enjoy a day at the sideshow”

A little mermaid

I kid you not.  This is actually how the organizers describe the event on the Coney Island USA website.  So, if your dog, cat, turtle, gerbil, etc. are into the macabre, then this is your event!

Taking place on Saturday, August 14th 2010 at 11am, and hosted by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that puts on the annual Mermaid Parade and the Coney Island Circus Sideshow , the Sweetheart Pet Pageant will include a costume pageant, raffles to benefit the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC), and other family-friendly activities.  For a unique pet-friendly weekend diversion, I’d say this one’s going to be hard to beat!

Location: 1208 Surf Ave, Brooklyn (map)

Admission: $10

Mobile adoptions in Brooklyn, August 2010

Yesterday during our Dog Friendly Brooklyn wanderings, Duke and I happened across a North Shore Animal League mobile adoptions van in Cobble Hill, with a gaggle (if I may use that word) of adorable, adoptable cats and dogs.

Going home!

We got to talking with a nice woman who just adopted this 7-month-old, as-yet unnamed puppy in the photo to the right. The pup was a really sweet “mystery mutt” who is sure to be a great companion.

The mobile adoptions van had many kittens and cats as well as other small- and mid-sized dogs. Most people assume they won’t find small dogs up for adoption at shelters, and although small breed puppies are somewhat unusual, slightly older small breed dogs are more common.

Below, I’ve put together a list of the mobile adoption events taking place in Brooklyn during the month of August (and the sponsoring organization for each). And here are some pics of the new friends Duke and I made!
